Ballet dancer

The most important lesson I learned, while being in NBA is to take care of yourself. To learn, how to use your body and to learn about your body's limits. The tip I would like to give to the future students is to learn as much as you can about the anatomy and extra exercising, because, first of all, it really improves your ballet technique, and, second of all, can make your career much longer. Don't underestimate the extra classes (like anatomy, pilates, body conditioning) that NBA is providing you with.

My name is Lauma Berga and I come from Latvia. It was there, when I first fell in love with dancing. I was very little, but what is strange, I fully remember it. I fell in love with the movement. When I first started attending classes, I had never seen a ballet production before, therefor you could say that I had no idea what I was doing. But it felt so right and natural that I never had a question in my mind, why exactly I kept doing it. Of course, now my love for dance is so deep and conscious, it has become part of me.

Many things inspire me. It is hard to name them all, since it can be a sensation that I feel, when I am on stage, any other sensation from my life, small but positive moments I have noticed in everyday life. Of course, there are certain dancers, who inspire me, but I am never trying to copy them, since it is something special and personal, that they have put in their work. Instead I am trying to find my own personal vision behind the dance, something I want to tell with my movement.

The only thing I hope for my future, is that I will be living with no regrets, without missed opportunities and that I will be able to say: I always did my best, everything that was in my power.

William Forsythe: Breaking the borders between neo-classical and contemporary dance

In my thesis I tried to answer my research question:

''How to categorise William Forsythe’s choreographies within his career and how to categorise William Forsythe as a choreographer?''

I looked into his biography and wanted to understand, where some of his inspiration came from, I compared his neo-classical works to his contemporary works, and conducted an interview with one of his former dancers and collaborators, now a well-known choreographer Heidi Vierthaler.
