About the National Ballet Academy
The Dutch National Ballet Academy (NBA) led by artistic director Jean-Yves Esquerre is the affiliated school of the Dutch National Ballet and the Dutch National Ballet Junior Company. We currently have about 140 pupils and students from Holland and abroad. Some of our international students come from top schools such as l’École de Danse de l’Opéra National de Paris, the English National Ballet School, San Francisco Ballet School, Canada’s National Ballet School and La Scala ballet school in Milan.
The school comprises: a six-year Pre-School Programme, a seven-year School Programme with academic studies in Dutch, an intensive Pre-Professional Programme with selected Dutch and international students and an After-School Programme offering a large selection of classes.
Hans van Manen, one of the world’s most influential choreographers and Ted Brandsen, artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet, respectively hold the positions of Honorary Patron and Artistic Advisor of the National Ballet Academy.
The faculty of internationally renowned teachers has trained dancers who have now joined many ballet companies worldwide including The Dutch National Ballet, The Royal Ballet, the Nederlands Dans Theater and the National Ballet of Portugal, to name a few.
Every year some dancers from the pre-professional programme are invited to join the Junior Company and some continue their professional career with the Dutch National Ballet.
Located in the heart of Amsterdam, centre of the Netherlands’ cultural life, NBA studios are included in the state-of-the-art building of the Academy of Theatre and Dance that offers several full bachelor and master study programmes in performing arts.
