Prospective students

Tuition fees 2012-2013

Everyone who registers as a student or to take a course at the Amsterdam School of the Arts is obliged to pay tuition or course fees. The tuition fees vary, depending among other things on the programme or course you will be enrolling in, whether or not you are from a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) and whether or not you have previously obtained a degree at the same level you are registering for.

Please note: due to changing government policies and declining funds for higher education the AHK had to raise its tuition fees for students from outside of the EEA and for study programmes that are not funded by the government, in order to meet the costs of education.

The tuition fees below apply for the academic year 2012-2013.

Statutory fee

The statutory tuition fee, set by the Dutch government, is set at 1,771 for the academic year 2012-2013. This rate also applies to all part-time bachelor's and master's programmes at the AHK.

Please note: you are only eligible for the statutory fee if you are from a country within the undefinedEuropean Economic Area, Switzerland or Surinam. The rate also applies to UAF refugee students.

You must also live in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg or parts of Germany. If you have previously obtained a degree in the Netherlands at minimally the same level you are registering for (i.e. a Bachelor's or Master's degree when registering for a Bachelor's programme or a Master's degree when registering for a Master's programme) you are not eligible for the statutory fee.

Long-term students

For students who need more time to finish their studies than the allotted time plus one year, a higher statutory rate applies. For the academic year 2012-2013 this rate is set at €4,834 and it applies to both bachelor's and master's students. The rate applies to students who register for a two-year programme for the fourth time (or more), for a four-year programme for the sixth time (or more), et cetera.

Institutional fees

Annually, the AHK sets the rates for students who are not eligible for the statutory fee. This applies to all part-time students, students from programmes that are not funded by government, students who have already obtained a diploma at the same level in the Netherlands and students from outside the European Economic Area.

Transitional fee for AHK students

The AHK applies a transitional fee for students who started their study a couple of years ago and who were confronted with (much) higher tuition fees due to changing government policy. Two groups of students are eligible for a transitional fee:

  • students who started their study at the AHK on or before 1 September 2010 and who register for a following year in the same bachelor's or master's programme in the academic year 2012-2013. The transitional fee does not apply when you start a master's programme after obtaining your bachelor's degree at the AHK.
The transitional fee is set at €2,750 for both full-time and part-time programmes (instead of €4,500 and €4,000 respectively).
  • students from outside the EEA who started their study at the AHK on or before 1 September 2009 and who register for a following year in the same programme in the academic year 2012-2013. Tuition fee loan

EU/EEA students who are not entitled to full study grants (in Dutch: studiefinanciering) for a Dutch course in higher education can apply for a loan to pay their tuition fees. This loan is known as loan tuition fees (in Dutch: collegegeldkrediet) and is paid monthly. You repay the sum you borrowed after your study.
