Amsterdam is a fascinating city with unlimited possibilities with regard to art, culture and recreation. The city centre is home to a number of large museums like the Rijksmuseum (with top works by Rembrandt and Vermeer) the Van Gogh Museum (with the largest Van Gogh collection in the world) and the Amsterdam Hermitage, the only auxiliary branch of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
To experience culture in Amsterdam, you do not have to go to a museum; a walk or a boat trip through the famous ring of canals with the many characteristic 17th and 18th century facades or an excursion through the picturesque former working-class quarter, ‘De Jordaan’ is enough. This historic neighbourhood, where the Anne Frank House is also located, was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 2010.
In addition to its rich history, Amsterdam has much more to offer; it is an exuberant, international city with an extensive range of shops, restaurants, sidewalk cafes, parks, theatres, concert venues (like the world-renown Concertgebouw), cinemas, etc. With so much to do and see, one need never be bored!
Amsterdam also serves as an excellent base for exploring the rest of Holland and other European cities. Paris, Berlin, Antwerp, London, Madrid, Rome and Barcelona are all within easy reach by train or airplane.
