Christopher Powney

Artistic director of the National Ballet Academy, Amsterdam &
International guest teacher


Christopher Powney has danced with many leading international dance companies including The English National Ballet and Rambert Dance Company. During his career he has performed and created many leading roles and worked with numerous prominent choreographers and artists, among them, Twyla Tharp, Lynne Seymour, Frederick Franklin, Christopher Gable, Frederick Franklin, Ohad Naharin, Glen Tetley, Rudolf Nureyev, Christopher Bruce and Jiri Kylian.

During his dance career, Christopher Powney turned his focus to teaching, having qualified with the Royal Ballet’s Professional Dancers Teacher’s Course. He was assistant artistic director of the Central School of Ballet’s graduate touring company and has had many years of international teaching experience. In 2000, he joined the teaching staff of the Royal Ballet’s Upper School. In 2006 he was invited to take on the position of graduate teacher with the Dance Department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Christopher has also taught at the Monaco Dance Forum, been a member of the board for the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine and is involved with the Prix de Lausanne. In September 2010, he was appointed artistic director of the National Ballet Academy, Amsterdam.
