Practical experience and internships

Familiarity with the professional field plays an important role in the Production and Stage Management study programme. Firstly, a close relation with active practice is guaranteed by teachers and coaches, who almost without exception are active in the professional field and can therefore provide first-hand information. These are professionals who are inspiring teachers and wish to share their knowledge and experience with a new generation of theatre makers.

Naturally, in the course of your study you will also gain personal experience. To that end the Theaterschool is an ideal environment; it is home to study programmes that cover the full range of theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes. You will work regularly on productions with students from other disciplines whereby Production and Stage Management students are responsible for production and stage management.

The third year of the study programme has two external internship periods, each lasting 3 months. During this time you will gain broad experience in various facets of your profession. The internships take place in different disciplines (theatre, dance, musical, opera, concerts, festivals). The first internship is aimed at the production period and the beginning of the performance schedule, while the second internship focuses on travelling with a stage production. You are also expected to follow an internship involving a large-scale production or one with a major theatre company plus an internship with a smaller organisation.

Because the internships are consciously scheduled at a relatively early stage in the curriculum, you can apply the inspiration and the new insights you acquire towards continuing your study, and discover which discipline you wish to specialise in.
