Tuition fee
The amount of the tuition fee applicable depends on the student’s nationality and previous education in the Netherlands (i.e. courses attended abroad do not count).
The higher vocational education (HBO) tuition fee is set in the summer each year. The statutory HBO tuition fee for 2010-2011 amounted to €1,672.
a. Students of Dutch nationality who have already completed a course in the Netherlands
If a student has obtained a BA only (and received four years’ student grant in the process), then he/she is entitled one further year’s student grant for an MA course. These students have to pay two years’ Statutory Tuition Fees here (€1,672 for the academic year 2010-2011).
If a student has obtained a BA, but failed to complete a Master’s study elsewhere, then he/she has to pay two years’ Statutory Tuition Fees here (€1,672 for the academic year 2010-2011).
If a student has obtained a BA and completed an MA elsewhere, then he/she has to pay two years’ Institutional Fees (set at €4,000 for 2011; subject to change).
b. EU students of non-Dutch nationality who have not attended a course in the Netherlands (the points listed under b. are applicable to those who have previously studied in the Netherlands)
On the basis of their nationality, these students have to pay two years’ Statutory Tuition Fees here (€1,672 for the academic year 2010-2011).
c. Non-EU students
Non-EU students have to pay two years’ Institutional Fees (set at €4,000 for 2011; subject to change) regardless of further circumstances.
In addition to the tuition fee or institutional fee, each student also has to pay a contribution towards teaching materials of €1,000 during the first year. This sum is used to purchase compulsory reading material, as well as paying for visits to (film) festivals or exhibitions.
The Institutional Fee for 2010-2011 has been set at €4,000, and the latest expectations are that it will remain at this level for the academic year 2011-2012. However, as this cannot be guaranteed, the fee may well be increased.
Given that an academic year in the Master’s Degree Programme in Film is spread over two regular academic years, the fees are also spread over two years (3/5 in the period up to September and 2/5 in the period up to January). Even if a student pays the regular tuition fee, then the 2/5 portion is adjusted to meet the level of new fees.
