Master of Museology

The Master of Museology offers the opportunity to reflect deeply on and experiment with new visions of heritage and its role in society. It focuses heavily on the future and on new approaches. The programme provides graduates with a wide range of theoretical knowledge and helps them develop an academic approach to museology combined with applied professional competencies.

Studying at the Reinwardt Academy means opting for intensive contact with cultural heritage in tangible objects as well as in intangible stories and recollections. About twenty selected students annually enrol in the programme. The students are treated as colleagues and develop skills to take part in the public discourse. During their eighteen months of studying, they become part of the international Academy’s network. As alumni they build their careers within cultural heritage organizations and also as independent consultants.

Amsterdam & international orientation

The Reinwardt Academy is located in Amsterdam, offering a stimulating environment with top-ranking international institutes in the field of heritage near at hand. Our students from all over the world bring an international flavour with new perspectives. For example, an Italian student did the preliminary works for an exhibition of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, in collaboration with New York Guggenheim Museum and Gropius Bau Berlin. Other students worked on innovative concepts for the Finnish design museum Alvar Aalto.

Career prospects

The Reinwardt Academy is closely connected with developments in the field. This offers students the possibility of building a professional network that can support them throughout their careers. Our graduate employment record speaks for itself: museum directors, consultants, project leaders, leading positions in NGOs, policy-makers at managerial level, heads of museum education departments, entrepreneurs in the heritage sector, careers in urban heritage, tourism, museum communication. Many graduates are teaching in museum studies programmes worldwide.
