BC Manjunath (percussion/konakkol) and Varijashree Venugopal (voice), are two established South-Indian musicians who spearhead profound renovation and innovation within Karnatic music. They both have become ‘viral’ social media phenomenon thanks to their prolific activity in Facebook and YouTube, always creating new and challenging pieces or ideas. Manjunath’s video of taking the Fibonacci’s series, turning it into a new tala and improvising on it, has had almost 20 million views! Varijashree also experiments with ‘Indian jazz fusion’, or records vocalisations of famous jazz pieces like Coltrane’s sax solo in Giant Steps.
They represent the new India, the one open to new ideas and experiences, but never abandoning their tradition. They will be holding 3 seminars at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, closing with a concert with completely new material created for the occasion.
All seminars and concerts are for free. Open to all musicians. No instruments needed and not previous knowledge of karnatic concepts either.
