Creative Producing / New Environments for learning Amsterdam

The department for Production and Stage Management in collaboration with the Performing Arts in Transition research group of the Amsterdam Theaterschool and the Master Creative Producing of the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama University of London, are organizing the 4th international symposium: Creative Producing / New environments for learning. After developing a better understanding of the role of the Creative Producer in the first three symposia, this edition is dedicated to innovative study programs and research in the field of producing, programming and curating. Both education and the professional practice have a key function in developing new values and methods to provoke transitions in the performing arts, therefore we deliberately bring them into dialogue with each other. All IETM participants are very welcome to join this symposium.

United we stand – Fair Practice Label

In September 2015 several artist driven platforms from the performing- and visual arts, from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have gathered in Amsterdam. Among them De Agenda and Platform BK (NL), State of the Arts (B) and Koalition der Freien Szene (D). What unites them: the need to organize themselves and offer concrete alternatives to the social and economic structures currently in place. Their aim: to learn from each other, to strengthen ‘counter movement’ and to encourage political action on a European level. At the IETM plenary meeting in Amsterdam on Saturday April 16th, 12.30-15 hrs, United We Stand will organize the second encounter of these interdisciplinary platforms in order to continue the dialogue, to open their initiative up to colleagues from the network and to focus specifically on the proposal of a 'Fair Practice Label’: a radical instrument to improve institutional ethics and sustainable working conditions for artists and cultural workers in the field.

Towards a fair practice in the arts

In the midst of budget squeeze and increasing pressure to perform - more and better, how can we assure our arts practices are ethically responsible and sustainable? The United We Stand proposal towards a Fair Practice Label in the Arts is an attempt to respond and to call for solidarity within the sector. This session aims to gather artists, curators, production teams, institutions, commissionaires, funding bodies, policy makers, etc., around working tables to discuss “best practices” taken from different disciplines in the arts field and to investigate how common actions can lead to effective changes.

How can we preserve the diversity of the arts and guarantee fair relationships in our sector? How do we take care of the flex workers in the sector? How do we guarantee the remuneration and the accrual of social rights for all artists and art workers? How do organizations (small and large) face up to the growing demand for co-responsibility and solidarity with the more vulnerable players? How do we guarantee a fair distribution of resources and the access to (cultural) infrastructure? How can we on the long term assure a fair distribution of revenues in the sector? What kind of agreements would underlie this? How would they be implemented and fulfilled? What role could unions and lobby organisations play? And last but not least: what is fair when the available means are not sufficient?
