A chicken shed made of seven trees
On Sunday 14th August 2022, we kicked off the 100% TREE Workshop 2022 organised by and for teachers and students from 7 European schools, in cooperation with TREE_TimberREengineered. It is an epilogue of the Crafting Wood trilogy, and a prelude to Crafting Circularity.
We (30 students and 10 teachers) will built and design one object (a chicken-shed) using the wood from seven trees. The 100%Tree workshop will be a circular experiment.
- CIRCULAR MATERIALS
The wood we use comes from seven trees of four different species from the city. Typically, these trees end up in the shredder or energy-plant. Now, we use these beautiful local oaks, elms, robinia and cedar as building material!
- REPLACEABLE & DEMOUNTABLE BUILDING
The building we make should be replaceable and demountable. To achieve this we will build the chicken-shed from discrete and modular components.
- TRADITIONAL AND INNOVATIVE CRAFTS
We will work in two workshops with all kinds of new & traditional tools.
- BUILDING ELEMENTS AND COMPONENTS
Working in groups of 5 students and teachers, each group will be responsible for a specific building element (consisting of different components).
- MATERIAL DRIVEN DESIGN
For each component we will choose the appropriate and available wood (oak, elm, cypress & robinia).
- COLLECTIVE TASK
During the week we will bring the building elements together through negotiating its measurements and grids before assembling them into one final object.
- DESIGN BY MAKING
Our final design is not a starting point but the result of a process of making, negotiating, joining.
