'Free to Work' | Agnese Cornelio

Agnese: ‘Across the past two years, I conducted interdisciplinary research on the subject of work, while operating at the intersection between film and theatre. Although trained as a director in theatre, my research developed into a documentary film about the mutual influence between individuals’ identities and their work. My research project, Free to Work, asks how people construct their identities through work, during a time in which work is increasingly important and a challenging variable in the construction of identity. Modern workers are now asked to be flexible in their working lives. Their ability to adapt (and their inability) has become a pressing social and political concern.

I take as my starting point the first article of the 1946 Italian constitution, which states that the new Italian republic, a democratic state, was founded on the concept of work. Work was intended as a method for seeking emancipation and the way to rebuild a nation, but that notion has been challenged across the past 50 years. Italy is no longer a working-class nation. The fall of the Italian “gastarbeider”, and the exodus of the Italian academic, managerial, and engineering classes, has coincided with a migration to professional and academic lifestyles. Modern Italy exists in criticism of the original values of the Italian constitution and its emphasis on the importance of labor and work.’
