Island Encounters
Martijn van Wijk (Architecture, Academy of Architecture) graduated with his project Island Encounters.
His design research focuses on creating architecture without a predefined programme, allowing the site itself to guide the process. Using an associative and intuitive approach, he explored the hidden layers of the Uilenburg neighbourhood in Amsterdam, using historical clues as a basis for subtle, context-driven interventions. His methodology integrates spatial, morphological, historical, narrative, artistic, and archaeological dimensions, resulting in designs that respectfully engage with the site’s rich heritage.
Martijn’s research advocates for an architectural practice that goes beyond economic efficiency and global trends, instead prioritising the intrinsic qualities of a place—its history, residents, and stories. This approach seeks to foster a sustainable future where architecture harmoniously aligns with the identity and needs of the community.
Recommendations
Marlies Boterman, AHK committee member: “Island Encounters is an ode to imagination and the layered nature of our urban fabric and architecture. Our profession deserves a design methodology like this, as a powerful voice and inspiration against uniformity.”
Alma Bouwens, Architect: “What makes Martijn’s work remarkable is his dedication to analogue methods in a time dominated by digital tools. He challenges not only himself but also his audience to look beyond the surface and uncover complex layers of space and perception.”
