Januari

Jetske Lieber, Julia Voets, Jim Sluis and their team (Bachelor Film, Netherlands Film Academy), graduated with their movie Januari.

Januari (22 min) explores the well-known phenomenon of "Ludduvuddu" (heartbreak) and the ensuing identity crisis in a nuanced way. The filmmakers aimed to bring a contemporary Amsterdam student life to the screen. It is their story, based on their experiences. Director Jetske Lieber’s personal motivation stemmed from a desire to tell a story about someone who doesn’t have it all figured out in a world that expects you to know—a feeling she confronted herself during a breakup.

Recommendations:

Marit Gerritsen, Head of Productions, Netherlands Film Academy: “A relatable journey for many young people, especially in this era where everyone seems to be expected to know who they are, what they want, and where they’re going. The team has beautifully captured this quest. Januari is a tribute to all those who are uncertain and questioning.”

Loes Komen and Eva Verweij, founders Room for Film: “We have known director Jetske Lieber for some time and we follow her development as a maker with great interest. Jetske is a maker who tells stories from sincerity, in a small, empathetic way and with compassion. (...) The film exudes creative control; every detail is carefully conceived, considered, and executed.”
