Local Object Names at the Wereldmuseum
Imke Joling graduated with the thesis “Local Object Names at the Wereldmuseum: A research into the changes in inclusivity, representation, and searchability of the collection management system of the Wereldmuseum Leiden through local object name implementation.”
The research by Imke focused on the impact of implementing local object names on the inclusivity, accessibility, and representation of the digital collection at the Wereldmuseum. The study involved a thorough document analysis, including an exploration of the current collection management system, the public-facing collection website, and internal documents. Additionally, interviews with heritage professionals provided multiple perspectives and insights to inform the analysis, conclusions, and recommendations.
The research offers practical advice for applying a wide range of theories related to collaboration, decolonization of museum collections, language use, multiperspectivity, inclusivity, representation, and accessibility. The findings reveal that local object names enhance the inclusivity, accessibility, and representation of museum collections. However, successfully accommodating local object names requires prior modifications to the collection’s registration system.
Recommendation:
Mirjam Shatanawi, supervisor research project: “Imke’s research makes a significant contribution to museum studies and heritage management. By addressing inclusivity in museum collections — especially objects from former colonies — giving answer to the question how can language make collections more accessible and representative?
The researcher focuses on improving inclusivity, accessibility and representation through the use of multiple languages, including those of the objects' areas of origin. This approach is closely aligned with broader discussions on the decolonisation of museums and engaging source communities.”
