No education at all AHK locations through 6 April

Update 27 March, 16.00 h:

Next week decision about education after 6 April:
On Monday 23 March, the Dutch government decided to take extra measures relating to the corona virus and to ban events and meetings until 1 June, among other things. However, this decision does not (yet) apply to education: the current measures are officially still in force through 6 April. The Dutch government will make new decisions about education on Tuesday 31 March. The AHK awaits these decisions in order to be able to properly determine how education will be organized in the coming period. It is already clear that online education, as set up with great enthusiasm by everyone in recent weeks, will continue to play an important role in the coming period. The exact structure of education after 6 April will be reported very shortly after 31 March via e-mail and on this page.

As of 14 March, all buildings are closed to students and employees, till April 6th.

Availability Central Student Administration
Due to the closure of the buildings, the desk of the Central Student Administration (CSa) on the Jodenbreestraat is also closed. The CSa is also expected to be difficult to reach by telephone. You can reach the CSa by email at csa@ahk.nl.

Questions about medical help and health insurance
If you need medical help (corona-related or not), please contact your doctor by telephone. If you do not have a general practitioner yet, register with a general practitioner as soon as possible. On MyAHK you will find important information about medical help and which general practitioner or genereal practice center you can contact, and about health insurance for foreign students!

As of March 14, all buildings will be closed to students and employees.

The following applies to all employees:

  • The academies are closed for employees. Employees can only work from home. For working at home, managers will discuss with their teams what what's possible and how to organise online education. You can find all the information you need to work at home on MyAHK at https://www.myahk.nl/group/serviceplein-personeel/thuiswerken (in Dutch, log in with your AHK address and corresponding password).

  • The normal procedure for reporting sick remains in effect.

  • Due to the new measures, all trips and excursions, both in and outside the Netherlands are cancelled untill the summer. As soons as education starts at the academies, individuel travels will be evaluated.

These measures are valid through 6 April. Keep an eye on your email and this page for all updates. Here you will find the most current information and frequently asked questions. Of course you can always contact your manager with questions.

Consultation hours company doctor
The AHK company doctor follows the guidelines of the RIVM to reduce direct contact moments. For AHK employees, this means that, at least through April 6, consultation hours will take place by telephone as much as possible. In necessary cases it will be examined whether the consultation hour can take place at a location to be agreed with the company doctor. However, the RIVM guidelines will be observed, which means that the appointment cannot go through with a cold, cough, sore throat and / or fever. Employees who have already made an appointment for a consultation hour will be personally informed by Human Capital Care (HCC).

In the event of worsening complaints that may indicate the coronavirus contact your doctor by telephone (in accordance with the RIVM guidelines). For questions about being allowed to work with a certain condition in connection with an increased risk of infection, please contact the company doctor: regio.noordwest@humancapitalcare.nl, 020-3057010.

Be alert to cyber crime!
In these exciting times, criminals try to strike online through hacking or phishing emails. Be alert to this and observe the following rules:

  • Do not just click on links in an email, unless you really trust the sender, and if in doubt, contact the ICT helpdesk via helpdesk@ahk.nl or 020 - 527 7752.
  • Do NOT give anyone your password, not even digitally.
  • Report suspicious situations immediately via helpdesk@ahk.nl or security@ahk.nl.
  • Do not open files that are sent in an email that you don't expect or trust.
  • If you receive an e-mail from a colleague with an assignment you do not trust, please contact that colleague by telephone to check whether it comes from that person.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Amsterdam University of the Arts deal with the consequences of the Corona virus?
The Amsterdam University of the Arts and her academies follow the guidelines of the national government and the RIVM. On March 12th, it was decided that at all higher education institutions (universities and colleges), there will be no education unless it’s online. As a consequence, all education was cancelled from March 13th on. All buildings are closed from March 14th. These measures are in place until at least April 6th.

What do I have to do in case I’m (possibly) infected with the virus?
The RIVM asks everyone to stay at home and avoid social contacts as much as possible, if there are any health complaints that match the ones connected to the Corona virus. This means you should stay at home, if you have one of the following symptoms:

  • cold; and/or
  • sore throat; and/or
  • coughing; and/or
  • fever; and/or

Please notice: only call the doctor when the complaints worsen.

What can I do to prevent the virus from spreading?
The most important measures to stop the virus from spreading, are the same ones that stop all viruses that cause the flew or a cold:

  • Wash your hands regularly with water and soap.
  • Subsequently, you can use hand sanitizer.
  • Cough and sneeze in the inside of your elbow.
  • Use paper towels and only use them once.
  • Do not shake hands and do not kiss or embrace when greeting.

Also, since March 12th the guideline is that everyone stays at home who has the complaints that match the Corona virus. Read: ‘What do I have to do in case I’m (possibly) infected with the virus?’

Can I visit my academy?
Students and employees cannot visit the academy; all buildings are closed.

Which educational activities can and cannot continue?
Through 6 April, all AHK buildings are closed to all activities. In most cases internships have also been stopped. Nevertheless, all study programs try to continue education as much as possible, for example by offering online education or by giving alternative assignments. This also applies to tests and assessments. Everywhere, customization is needed. You will be informed about this by the study management of your study program.

What about my study progress?
We try to accomplish as much as possible, so the delay in everyone’s study will be minimized. Specifics regarding this topic will follow shortly.

What about the obligation to be present in class?
Since all education is cancelled as a decree by the national government, the obligation to be present in class is no longer valid.

What happens to the Binding Study Recommendation?
The minister has determined that students who are unable to comply with the Binding Study Recommendation (BSA) of the study program because they have suffered a study delay due to the coronavirus, may be granted a postponement. See the full text here (in Dutch). The AHK wants to implement this measure in the following way:
 
A personal consultation is conducted (if this has not already happened) with each student for whom, based on the study results before 15 March, there are any doubts as to whether the continuation of the study is promising. You have previously received a warning letter for the BSA from the study program. During the consultation you will receive explicit advice about the continuation of your studies. Naturally, your personal situation is also taken into account. This consultation is not without obligation; if you decide to continue your studies after this meeting, a personal study plan will be drawn up in which a number of conditions can be laid down, for example which courses you must complete first. If the conditions for a positive BSA are not met at the end of the second academic year, a negative BSA will still follow. The usual objection and appeal procedures will remain in effect.

If, despite the consequences of the Coronavirus, you do meet the BSA standard at the end of the academic year, the BSA will not be postponed, but you can continue the study until graduation.

If you earn 60 EC this year, you will receive a propaedeutic diploma. This is processed administratively at DUO. You will be notified of your training when the certificate is issued.

The program committees are asked to advise on this approach in the short term.

What are the financial consequences for me?
For many students, the income from a (side) job or independent entrepreneurship is lost. The minister points out that it is possible to (temporarily) borrow more from DUO. If you have not yet borrowed to the maximum, you can still do so retroactively until the start of this academic year (1 September 2019). It is also possible to apply for tuition fees credit. You can arrange this yourself via DUO.

If you experience problems with paying your tuition fees, please contact the Central Student Administration at csa@ahk.nl. For example, a payment arrangement can be agreed.

Within the AHK, extra measures are being considered for students who get into financial difficulties as a result of study delays due to the corona crisis. Many students wonder if they will have to pay tuition fees next year if they experience a study delay. Legally speaking, the AHK cannot exempt students from tuition fees, the minister will have to make a decision on this.

What happens if my visa expires due to study delay? (for international students)
The Central Student Administration (CSa) makes an inventory of which students may have problems with their visa if they cannot obtain all credits. You will receive notification of this from the CSa. Then make an appointment with the dean. The dean can prepare a letter with an "excusable reason", with which you can extend your visa. You must upload this letter in VisaCare before 1 May.

What do I have to do if I want to travel abroad?
The national government demanded to cancel all non-urgent travels. For AHK employees and students, there is no permission to travel for work and or study. Therefore, students and employees who do travel against this advice, are doing this by definition as a private travel. The AHK does not accept any responsibility or liability. Any study or internship related matters on these travels will not be credited with study credits. If you’re still in a foreign country for your internship and you did not have any contact yet with your teacher, please do so as soon as possible, to discuss your situation.

What happens with admission and selection procedures?

Many study programmes have planned activities that are part of the selection procedure in the period March - June. These activities will be offered at a different time or in a different way. Visit the website of the academy where you wish to study for information on the admission period and procedures.

Students who wish to transfer from mbo to a programme at the AHK and who have not yet completed their study programme at mbo-level, can be admitted conditionally. The mbo-diploma must have been obtained before 1 January 2021, after which the registration will become definitive. This also applies to students who wish to transfer from a bachelor's to a master's programme.

For students wishing to enroll in the Reinwardt Academy's bachelor's programme, the application deadline shifts from 1 May 1 to 1 June.
