Nominee AHK Eindwerkprijs 2021: Abhay Kumar
Studies: Master of Film (MA), Netherlands Film Academy
Graduation project: Sector Quicksand
Medium: Film in development

Abhay Kumar, graduate Master in Film (MA) at Netherlands Film Academy, AHK / Amsterdam University of the Arts.

Chandigarh stands out as a curious city with a rigid grid in the chaotic Indian landscape. Swiss architect Le Corbusier designed Chandigarh in 1964 as a utopian vision of what modern independent India could be. Straight lines and 'form function function' are clearly visible in the urban design. In 2020, Abhay Kumar visits his retired parents in his hometown of Chandigarh to resolve an ongoing disagreement over his life choices. During his stay with his parents, where moments of gentle affection are interrupted by a total communication breakdown, the filmmaker begins to suspect that the city has a very important role to play in this unraveling situation.

This “eindwerk” or graduation project was one of eleven graduation projects nominated for the AHK Eindwerkprijs 2021, the Graduation Award of the Amsterdam University of the Arts.
