Module | Business in practice
You’re ready to go. Your company is in the starting blocks. Now it’s time to focus on the everyday reality of running a business. You’ll need to work out how much to charge – but how flexible should you be? What should you spend your time doing, what does ‘fair practice’ actually mean, and what is your unique value? In this series of classes, you’ll get the answers to these questions.
Class 1 | Running a business: Money
9 December 2019, 19:00-21:30, by Pauline Beran
As an entrepreneur, your commercial skills are as crucial as your creative skills – in the end, it’s all about the bottom line. There’s a whole range of methods for working out the right price to charge for what you offer. We’ll teach you all of them, including international pricing. And what should you do if your rates come under pressure? We’ll look at how to incorporate your rates in business negotiations.
Class 2 | Running a business: Time
16 December 2019, 19:00-21:30, by Carolien van der Schoot
Managing your time is a real challenge when running a business. You could take on that second assignment – it’s an opportunity after all – but what will that mean for your private life. And what do you do if you’ve totally underestimated the timeframe for a particular project? If you’re spending all your time putting out small fires, what effect is that going to have on your long-term plans? You’ll learn how to take charge of your own time.
Class 3 | Running a business: Fair practice
6 January 2020, 19:00-21:30, by Sophie van Hoorn
Business should be conducted sustainably, honestly and transparently. In practice, though, business isn’t always fair. So what do you do if a client says, ‘Do it for less, or don’t do at all’, or pits you against your competitors? Would you stay true to your core values? Using real-world examples, you'll shape your own vision and learn how to make decisions.
Class 4 | Running a business: Value
16 January 2020, 19:00-21:30, by Braenworks
As an artist, you need to be aware of the value you offer. Do you feel sure enough of yourself to firmly communicate your rates to clients? What about if you need to apply for funding? Never forget you’re not asking for a favour – it’s an exchange after all! You offer something that other people are willing to pay for. Learn to see the value you have to offer, at a fair price.
