Freelance course | Module: Business in practice (Fair Practice)

How do you build a fair work practice? How do you stand up for yourself and others in business affairs? How do you relate to work situations in which the other party has more power than you and uses it in a transgressive way? What does inclusion and diversity mean in your work practice and how should you act? How do you cope mentally in a complex field in which saying ‘no’ often doesn’t feel like an option? How do we show what we’re worth without becoming defensive?

With the in-depth ‘Fair Practice Module’ series of lessons, you learn to think and reflect with your fellow students from other study programmes about these complex questions. The goal of the module is not to find answers but to help you form your own perspective which you in turn, can communicate in your own work environment. We give insight in the cultural work field and its most important players and provide practical tools which you can apply if you need to stand up for yourself, your colleagues or the cultural sector as a whole.

Class 1 | Fair chain
Monday 26 October 2020 at 19:00-22:00, by Simone van Bennekom
How does the system within the cultural sector work and how can you exert influence to bring about a fairer work practice?
Description: This lesson that serves as an introduction to the fair practice code, will look at the significance of fair practice for you and what you can do to take action (together), how you can signal developments and put things on the agenda.

Class 2 | Fair Share
Monday 2 November 2020 at 19:00-22:00 (teacher will be announced later)
Why is fair share important and how do you implement diversity and inclusiveness in your own work practice? Central to this lesson is the importance and urgency of an inclusive work practice. You gain insight in the current division and learn what the implications are of the ‘diversity and inclusion code’. We consult with each other on the basis of an existing casus. Working together as a team, we arrive at solutions and draw up points of action.

Class 3 | Fair Pay
Monday 9 November 2020 at 19:00-22:00, by Jimmy-Pierre de Graaf
What is fair pay and how do you go about organizing it? In this lesson we discuss remuneration and honoraria in the cultural sector. We also calculate the expenditure of the chain as a whole to see who in practice is liable for the highest costs and then compare it to another sector. You learn to charge an honest fee for yourself. The importance of general conditions and contracts is also dealt with. With the aid of a casus we put what you have learned into practice.

Class 4 | Fair time
Monday 16 November 2020 at 19:00-22:00 Jacob Derkx
The value of mental health. In this lesson we question what a sustainable notion of time is and how to make this a reality for yourself and others. You gain insight in the collective labour agreement and the Working Hours Act and we deal with and look at the differences between the concept of ‘time’ in Western and African philosophy. We help you comprehend the topicality of pressure to perform and burn-out. On the basis of a casus, you discover how to deal with work stress – your own and that of others – and receive tools to help you cope.
