Termination of enrolment
Have you graduated or do you want to (temporarily) quit your study programme for another reason? If so, arrange your termination of enrolment via Studielink. Do this in time, so that you don’t have to pay excess tuition fees. If you don’t submit a request for termination of enrolment, your enrolment will continue until the end of the academic year (31 August).
Graduation
Are you going to graduate? Congratulations! As soon as you know that you have obtained all your credits, you can submit a request for termination of enrolment via Studielink. Please ensure that you select the option ‘graduation’ when submitting your request for termination of enrolment. You should also fill in the desired termination of enrolment date.
(Temporarily) quitting your studies
Would you like to quit your studies during the academic year? If so, submit a request for termination of enrolment via Studielink. You can submit a request for termination of enrolment once a month. For example: Are you submitting a request for termination of enrolment via Studielink in January? In that case, 1 February is the first opportunity for termination of enrolment that you can select.
Would you like to terminate your enrolment temporarily, because you would like to resume your studies at a later time? If so, always discuss this with your study programme first, as the academy must give official approval when you want to resume your studies. The student counsellor can help you and give you advice.
Refund of tuition fees
If you have terminated enrolment, the Central Student Administration will check whether you are entitled to a refund of tuition fees. For every month that you are enrolled, you pay a twelfth of the tuition fees. If you are entitled to a refund, you will receive the amount automatically on the bank account known to us within a few weeks.
Please note: Are you submitting your request for termination of enrolment after 31 May? In the event of termination of enrolment as of 1 July or 1 August, you are not entitled to a refund of tuition fees.
Stopping student finance and student travel product
If you have terminated your enrolment, you will no longer be entitled to student finance and the student travel product. You should stop your student travel product via a top-up and collection machine. You stop your student finance yourself via the Education Executive Agency (DUO). If you do not do this, you risk receiving a fine.
1 February scheme for first-year students
Are you doing a study programme in higher education for the first time and would you like to stop in the first year? If you terminate enrolment before 1 February, and you stop your student finance and student travel product, you will not have to pay back the grant and your student travel product. Read more about the terms and conditions on the DUO website.
Residence permit
Do you hold a residence permit for the purpose of study? The date of graduation/termination of enrolment will directly affect your permission to stay in the Netherlands. The AHK is required to report the date of termination of enrolment to the IND (The Immigration and Naturalisation service) and your residence permit will become invalid.
- Will you terminate your enrolment without obtaining your degree? Then you will be required to leave the Netherlands within 4 weeks.
- Will you terminate your enrolment after graduation? Then you will be required to leave the Netherlands within 3 months after your official graduation date (note: Only if your residence permit is still valid during those 3 months!). You will have time to collect your diploma and apply for an orientation year (optional).
- Will you continue your studies at a different university (of applied sciences) in the Netherlands? Then make sure to start your application on time in order to switch sponsors.
