On 10 July 2018, the Dutch Senate approved the bill to halve tuition fees for all first-year students who are eligible for the statutory fee. If you are following a second bachelor's or master's degree programme, you will not pay statutory tuition fees but institutional tuition fees. This also applies if you come from a non-EEA country and start a study programme at the AHK. This is stipulated in article 7.46 of the Higher Education and Scientific Research Act (WHW).
Higher education institutions apply this institutional fee because the Dutch government does not fund the education of the above-mentioned group of students. The amount of the institutional tuition fee is set annually by the Executive Board and may vary per programme or per group of students. It may not be lower than the statutory fee.
Increase in institutional tuition fees for new students as from academic year 2024-2025
To bring the institutional tuition fees more in line with the costs of education, from academic year 2024-2025 the AHK's institutional fees for new students will increase more sharply than in previous years. Over a period of four years, the fees will gradually increase to a minimum of €10,000*. Keep a close eye on our website for the current fees.
* No rights can be derived from this amount. Annual increases depend on internal and external factors and may be higher due to, for example, inflation, AHK policy, government policy or changes in the law.
Annual increase in institutional tuition fees for current students
The fee for current students in an Associate Degree, Bachelor's or Master's degree (started in academic year 2023-2024 or earlier) will be increased annually by the percentage by which the Dutch government increases the statutory tuition fee rate.
Institutional fees for students in a preliminary programme
If you are following a preliminary study programme at the AHK in 2023-2024 and want to continue your studies here in 2024-2025 on an Associate Degree, Bachelor's or Master's degree, you will pay the rate for new students from 2024-2025 when you are not entitled to the statutory tuition fee rate.
The British departure from the European Union (Brexit) on 1 January 2021, can affect the tuition fee rates of British students. British students will pay the higher institutional tuition fee rate, starting from a point of enrolment after 31 December 2020, unless they were registered at a Dutch municipality on or before this date. For British students that were Dutch residents before Brexit it is important to apply for a Dutch residency permit with the Dutch Immigration and naturalization Service (IND) before 1 July 2021.
For students that moved or will move to the Netherlands after 31 December 2020, or temporarily left the country before that date, the situation is different.
Check the IND website for more information about Brexit and what impact the changes have on your personal situation.
From academic year 2023-2024 onwards, the institutional fees for non-EU students applies to new students with a Ukrainian nationality.
The tuition fees for Ukrainian students who commenced their study programmes at AHK in 2022-2023 or earlier, will be lowered to a statutory fee for academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025.
