The block is concerned with practices of attentiveness. What are the conditions in which we make our work? How do we structure these conditions in ways that enable the work we want and need to make? How do we exercise the muscles of perception, when we make our own work and attend to the work of others? How do we respond to the pressures that frequently assail us, with our own forms of patience, our own ways of paying attention to what matters?
The block is structured around a series of extended encounters with four international visitors:
- For the past three weeks the students have been working with Simon Vincenzi on the opening section of the block titled 'Without A Care In the World'. These three weeks have been about looking – the act of looking and the possibilities and complexities of its translation. The act of looking at space and at time - the space and time of the idea and of the image;
- The second visit is from American performance-makers Matthew Goulish and Lin Hixson, exploring practices of ‘awakening’ and ‘defamiliarisation’ as bases for making our work;
- At the mid-point of the block the climate changes significantly and the students shall become the visitors. We will spend a week in London attending Trashing Performance;
- On our return from Amsterdam we spend a week with our third and last visitor, Italian theatre-maker, writer and teacher Claudia Castellucci. Claudia establishes another climate for the sharing of thought and the production of a rhythm of practice, for speaking and acting carefully, for a focused attentiveness that extends towards the unpredictable attention of others.
