From 23 January to 18 February 2012, the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) will host the renowned Canadian choreographer Benoît Lachambre as its Artist in Residence (AIR). Together with 37 SNDO students, Benoît Lachambre will be creating a work based on 37 solos, entitled 37 Solos/Snake Charmers’ Ball.
37 Solos/Snake Charmers’ Ball will have its premiere on 18 February 2012 at the Something Raw Festival in Frascati theatre, Amsterdam. On the closing evening of the festival, all 37 solos will be performed over a period of four hours in the Brakke Grond’s Expo zaal (Expo Room). Audience members will be able to view individual solos on several stages and there will be a flexible viewing choice. Composer Ivo Bol will accompany the students musically during this performance.
This residency offers SNDO students the opportunity to experience Lachambre’s working methods at close hand by participating directly. Their work with him will form part of his preparation for the new solo Snakeskins, which he will make in 2012.
About Benoît Lachambre
In addition to his work as a dancer and choreographer, Canadian Benoît Lachambre (1960) is a teacher and dance ‘improvisor’. As a choreographer, he has worked on many different productions of the last 30 years, and he has been involved in works by fellow choreographers Meg Stuart, Sasha Waltz and Boris Charmatz. Lachambre views dance as inextricably bound up with visual art and performance art. In 1996, Lachambre set up Par B.L.eux, which focuses on research and creation in dance.
This AIR project was developed in collaboration with the Art Practice and Development research group at the Amsterdam School of the Arts.
