On the last day of the Dutch Dance Festival Keren Levi, a student on the Amsterdam Master of Choreography programme, was awarded the Dioraphte Dance Prize 2013 for the production The Dry Piece. The Dioraphte Dance Prize is awarded for a dance production of international potential.

All the productions presented during the Dutch Dance Festival compete for the prize. The prize money of € 5000, contributed by Stichting Dioraphte, will go to promoting the selected piece in the international dance world. This year, the jury comprised Zvonimir Dobrovic (Artistic Director of the Perforations Festival, Croatia), Morag Deyes (Artistic Director Dance Base, Edinburgh) , Markéta Perroud (Tanec Praha, Czech) and Fons Dejong (Dance Programmer, Theater aan het Vrijthof, the Netherlands).

In their comments on The Dry Piece the jury noted: “The work that had the most impact was considered to be remarkably fresh. We saw very skilled dancers, a beautiful staging and an impressive sound scape. It is esthetic, erotic and simply profoundly human. The work which is performed in a small space becomes a point of departure for the audience to immerse themselves in the limitless space of their imagination. With subtle and gentle movements and the use of new media, this reflects the core values of the award.”

Besides the Dioraphte Dance Prize, last week during the Dutch Dance Festival, the Dutch Dance Festival Maastricht was presented to Giulio D’Anna. The winners of the VSCD dance prizes (known as the ‘swans’) are Bonnie Doets (Gouden Zwaan), Club Guy & Roni for the production ‘Midnight Rising’ (most impressive dance production of 2013) and dancer Medhi Walerski for his role in ‘School of Thought’ by Nederlands Dans Theater I (best dance performance of 2013).
