An edition of the IETM Spring Plenary Meeting – a major gathering of European theatre professionals – will be held in Amsterdam from 14 to 17 of April. The main focus this time will be ‘Live Arts in Digital Times’, there will be activities and performances in various Amsterdam theatres, with the Stadsschouwburg as the main venue. One of the shows is Horror by Jakop Ahlbom. Jakop graduated in 1998 from the Amsterdam University of the Arts’ Mime Study Programme and he now produces work under his own name.

Horror was first staged in 2014, to unanimously glowing reviews. The show creates a surreal world of horror with special effects that are not usually seen in the theatre – Ahlbom had found a way to mould the cinematic effects used in horror films into a theatrical form.

Jakop Ahlbom is thrilled that Horror will play at IETM. ‘It’s also quite something that we’re getting to perform the whole play, because you’re normally only allowed to stage extracts at IETM, as a sort of showcase of your work. Horror lends itself easily to an international audience, because it doesn’t involve any dialogue. Our relationship with the IETM is a long one. My manager Wilma Kuite attends their meetings regularly to make contacts and meet people. I attended one myself once, when it was held in Sweden. I got to see some interesting projects that I wasn’t previously aware of. Horror has already been staged in France, England and Belgium, but the major foreign tour is yet to come. The IETM also attracts producers and suchlike, so something could come out of this – that’s what we hope, in any case. We’d love to stage this in other European countries and right across the world.’
