The National Ballet Academy is presenting its end-of-year performances Dancers of Tomorrow in Dutch National Opera & Ballet on Thursday 7 July and Friday 8 July. The programme includes works by Gioconda Barbuto, August Bournonville, David Dawson and John Neumeier, a large-scale world dance piece by Iva Lesic and the new addition of a choreographic demonstration set to Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s Grande Tarantelle.
The thread running through this edition of Dancers of Tomorrow is, says artistic director Jean-Yves Esquerre, the inestimable significance of traditional folk dance as the basis of everything subsequently created in the field of dance. ‘Even though there is huge diversity in the programme – from pure classical to edgy contemporary – you see that influence in every aspect of the performance’.
And this certainly applies to Gottschalk Demo a piece choreographed by the NBA teaching team to Gottschalk’s dazzling, high-spirited Grande Tarantelle. For his composition, Gottschalk (1829-1869) was inspired by the tarantella, an Italian gypsy dance named after the tarantula spider. In the past, this spider’s bite was thought to be deadly and could only be cured by dancing wildly. The piece combines classical ballet technique with elements of folk dance and gives an opportunity to seven couples from the pre-professional programme and 28 students from NBA 5, 6 and 7 to show off their technical capabilities to the full.
The other previously announced items on the programme are:
• TRACES – A world dance work by Iva Lesic that takes the audience on a journey from India to Central Europe.
• CONSERVATOIRE – A tribute by the renowned nineteenth-century Danish choreographer August Bournonville to the delicate French ballet style.
• TILL THEN – A contemporary work by Gioconda Barbuto, created exclusively for and in close cooperation with the NBA students.
• 5 – An overwhelmingly dynamic piece, in which choreographer David Dawson (Associate Artist with Dutch National Ballet) stretches balletic limits to the extreme.
• YONDERING – A gem by master choreographer John Neumeier, which is tailor-made for the qualities of young dancers.
