Winter School 2018: The right to silence, the right to speak!

Friday 26th of January the final presentations took place of the Winter School 2018. This year the jury, with external jury member Defne Ayas (director Witte the With, Rotterdam), decided to choose two winning projects. The group with project Ctrl Alt Delete Parkeet, because of their political incorrect solution. Next to that, the project Fields of Thoughts won, because of their optimism and interactivity. The jury said that the two projects together have the best answer to create a high quality city park at the Kop van Java.

Assignment
During the first week of the Winter School 2018 a total of 18 groups of students were asked to design ‘a silence’ for the Kop van Java. During the second week of the Winter School 2018 the assignment developed from a brainstorm to a concept, leading to a final presentation on Friday 26 January. Also students were asked to form and present their designed silence as a ‘thought’ in 280 characters, the current Twitter limit.

Sarah van Sonsbeeck
The Amsterdam Academy of Architecture has invited artist Sarah van Sonsbeeck to be Artist in Residence (AiR) for the academic year 2017-2018. She was asked to inspire students through her artistic research into silence by curating the Winter School 2018. In this two-week research and design program, the three disciplines of architecture, urban design and landscape architecture joined forces, represented by first-, second- and third-year students.
