Breitner Academy and Jan Hoek present Me and the Tourist: an exhibition about Amsterdam and its tourists

Published on

From Thursday 15 to Thursday 22 February, the exhibition Me and the Tourist can be admired at Q-Factory Hotel Amsterdam and four other hotels in the Dutch capital. The exhibition is the result of the collaboration of students from the Breitner Academy, part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts, with the well-known Amsterdam artist and photographer Jan Hoek. He has been an Artist in Residence at the Breitner Academy since December. In this collaboration students examined their personal relationship with the tourist and how that enriched their lives and the city.

Human face
Amsterdam and tourists belong together. Millions of people from all over the world come to our capital. The number of tourist overnight stays came to nearly 13 million in 2017 and will increase by 10 percent in 2018. Amsterdam is booming!

That's great for Amsterdam, but for the residents, the huge number of guests can occasionally feel like a zombie plague that takes over the city. On the other hand, residents of Amsterdam do not always see the beauty and diversity and all the different stories behind the tourists who visit our capital. With Me and the Tourist, Jan Hoek and the students of the Breitner Academy want to give the tourist a more human face.

Participating hotels
The students have turned their vision on the tourist in Amsterdam into works of art that came about under the inspiring leadership of artist / photographer Jan Hoek. The artworks can be viewed in five hotels: DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Central Station, Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht, ClinkNoord, Q-Factory Hotel Amsterdam and The Student Hotel Amsterdam West.

Opening and access
The exhibition will be festively opened on Thursday 15 February at 16.00 at the Q-Factory Hotel, Atlantisplein 1, Amsterdam. The opening and the exhibition are freely accessible.
