The week of Eros

The week from 28 January to 1 February is The Week of Eros at the Breitner Academy, organised in collaboration with the AHK’s Artists in Residence programme and the online arts magazine Mister Motley.

Working under the guidance of the artists L.A. Raeven, David Bade, Koes Staassen, Aukje Dekker and Kinke Kooi, students will make their own art on the theme of eroticism. They will also engage in dialogue with artists, writers and speakers on the subject of sex, sexuality and intimacy. The week will conclude with an exhibition.

For The Week of Eros, Mister Motley has invited artists, writers, speakers and scholars to come and talk about sex, sexuality and intimacy – all subjects we have trouble finding words for. The five participating artists all engage with eroticism in their work. They seek to explore, experience and understand sexuality, eroticism, pornography, gender, the naked body and the relation between eroticism and spirituality. Through their experimentation, these artists are blurring boundaries and expanding our perceptions of sex.

This week-long and wide-ranging discussion of often complex concepts will immerse students in the meaning and value of sexuality in the visual arts.

The highlight of the week will be a short exhibition on Friday 1 February at 1 Distelweg, North Amsterdam: the opening will be held at 17:00, and the exhibition will close at 19:00.
