Early 2019, Leiden University together with the Reinwardt Academy and TU Delft proposed a research project taking an intersectional approach towards inclusivity and accessibility in the heritage field. The proposal has now been awarded funding by the Dutch Research Council.

Under the unique research programme Smart Culture - Art and Culture, seven research projects have received total funding of nearly 3 million euros with the aim of making connections between innovative artistic and cultural practices on the one hand, and scientific and societal issues on the other. One of the awarded research proposals was submitted by Eliza Steinbock of Leiden University, Hester Dibbits of the Reinwardt Academy and Dirk van den Heuvel of TU Delft.

Today’s “critical visitors”
The project The Critical Visitor investigates how heritage institutions can achieve inclusion and accessibility within their organization, collection, and exhibition spaces that meets the breadth of demands placed by today’s “critical visitors”. Fifteen heritage partners collaborate on activities to develop language and tools that dismantle intersecting oppressions, forms of exclusion, and marginalization.

The overarching research method is the applied science method of triangulating theory-ethics-practice to achieve greater professionalism in the field of heritage. This method is taught at the Reinwardt Academy. The research project runs from the 1st of January 2020 till the 1st of January 2025.
