On 15 September, 1884, Daniel de Lange, Frans Coenen, Julius Röntgen and Joh. Messchaert opened the forerunner of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam: the Amsterdamsch Conservatorium. In its first year, 32 students took lessons in general music theory, counterpoint, music history, composition, voice, piano, organ, violin and cello.
Today, 140 years later, the CvA is a vibrant international community of some twelve hundred students spread across the classical, early music, jazz, pop, electronic music, opera and music in education departments. A milestone that invites us to look back, but also to look forward, as we enter another year of many wonderful concerts, projects, guest teachers, collaborations and inspiration!
