This book is an unique collaboration between two art academies, the Academy of Theatre and Dance of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) and of the Academy of Theatre & Dance ArtEZ (Hogeschool voor de kunsten Arnhem), and focuses on the health and wellbeing of the dancer/performer.
In this study guide, members of each academy health team describe the different challenges faced by performers, from a whole person perspective: – The role of both body and mind in fully realizing your potential in a healthy, thoughtful, and sustainable way.
This textbook is primarily intended for dancers/performers who use their body as a (creative) instrument, such as dancers, circus artists, mimers and figure skaters. Additionally, the material can inspire and support professionals from pedagogical and care disciplines.
Quote from the foreword by Anthony Heidweiller (Deputy Director ATD):
“It’s hard to avoid the impression that within the arts, we often take preventive care for our bodies too lightly. In the current business model, where the production process is geared towards producing numerous unique, original, and innovative results in a short time, there remains a lack of awareness among artists and art educators regarding the physical consequences. Are we fully aware that, from day one in arts education, we are consciously – or unconsciously - preparing students for a life that is frequently stressful and exhausting?”
Perform Wiser is a 'living manuscript' and this first edition is therefore in syllabus form. Topics highlighted in the book: parts A and B cover the anatomical structures of the human body. Part C focuses on movement in general. Part D provides insight into the most common injuries, including strategies for prevention and guidelines for recovery, in case an injury occurs. Part E explores the mental skills you can develop including goal setting, focus, visualisation, mindfulness and cognitive training. Part F, finally, provides a comprehensive look at the role of nutrition. You will learn why proper nutrition is crucial and what additional dietary needs performers have to achieve optimal performance.
