The research group Arts Education, part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK), invites (aspiring) art teachers, students, and arts professionals to the interactive book launch of Wicked Arts Education. This new book, authored by professors Melissa Bremmer and Emiel Heijnen, along with former professor Folkert Haanstra, offers a fresh perspective on arts education and supports teachers in developing contemporary, socially relevant arts programs.

Drawing from research within the Arts Education group, Wicked Arts Education provides tools and resources to help arts professionals enhance their teaching practice. This book takes an innovative approach to arts education and is the first Dutch-language book to guide readers step-by-step in creating an arts education curriculum with a special focus on connecting art with societal themes.

Interactive Workshops at the Book Launch
During the book launch, participants will not only discover the contents of Wicked Arts Education but can also actively engage in inspiring workshops. Whether you are interested in visual arts, music, theater, film, design, or interdisciplinary projects, Wicked Arts Education offers tools and insights for every arts educator:

  1. Art = Assignment (Melvin van der Woude and Tamar Clasquin)
Did you know that your favorite artwork contains a hidden assignment? In this workshop, you’ll learn to quickly design an assignment based on a current, inspiring artwork using the REO design strategy.
  2. A 10 for Effort (Gina Sanches and Oskar Maarleveld)
In this session, we will present and question fresh approaches to evaluating art. You will create and visualize your own assessment criteria, inspired by the interdisciplinary and visual Wicked rubric.
  3. Cooking with Sources (Arida Bandringa and Anneke Willemsen)
Join this hands-on session to learn how to create a thought-provoking theme using sources from the arts, society, and learners' own experiences. Can you quickly develop a lesson around a theme for your own educational practice?

About the Research Group Arts Education
Issues that arise from the arts education and instruction at the teacher training programmes of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) form the starting point for our research. In addition, we focus in particular on the themes of interdisciplinarity (within and outside the arts) and social engagement. Our research offers arts professionals guidelines to substantiate their practice theoretically, as well as tools that directly applicable in practice.
