The Amsterdam University of the Arts is proud to celebrate Orlando Ceder, alumnus and lecturer in the Music in Education programme, as the winner of the prestigious ECHO Award 2024 in the HBO category. The ECHO Awards recognize socially active students with non-Western backgrounds who choose engagement and connection in polarized times, standing out for their unique contributions to society. The awards ceremony took place on Thursday, 28 November, in a festive event. We also celebrate Lindsey Vroom, an alumna of the Theatre in Education programme, for her nomination. Her selection from numerous candidates is a testament to her talent and dedication. While she did not win, Lindsey joins the ranks of ECHO Ambassadors, highlighting her societal impact.

Orlando is the artistic leader and founder of Black Harmony, a music group renowned for its close harmony and Afro-Surinamese percussion, exclusively performed in Sranantongo. The group’s mission is to connect people through music while addressing significant societal issues, such as slavery. The jury praised Orlando’s visionary approach to educational reform: “Orlando impressed us with his strong vision for transforming education from within. By focusing on the culture of Amsterdam-Zuidoost, he pioneers curriculum change and actively involves the local community in the process.” Through his work, Orlando contributes to a more inclusive educational landscape, demonstrating how music and culture enrich learning experiences. The ECHO Award highlights his role as a role model for students across the Netherlands.
