Menno Otten has been a guest teacher at the Film Academy since 2010 and a regular teacher of the course Film in Context since 2019. He is praised for his innovative teaching methods, daring to experiment and break through traditional teaching forms together with his fellow lecturer Kathleen Lotze.
He prefers to see the classroom as a studio in which to experiment in abundance, he makes theory tangible through physical assignments (embodied learning), he organizes excursions and exhibitions at the academy, and he includes current themes in his lessons.
In addition to his work as a teacher, Otten is a successful documentary filmmaker and the creator and director of the VPRO program Hoofdzaken. His practical experiences are a source of inspiration for his teaching. Students appreciate his involvement and creative approach, which motivates them to look beyond the beaten path.
Menno Otten is one of four nominees for the title. The winner will be announced on April 7 and will receive a €25,000 scholarship to invest in educational innovation.
