Composer Xiangming Niu, alumna of the Composing for Film master programme, has won the Keep an Eye Filmscore Award for her score for the film kus kus beng beng. Composer Pablo González Cardona received a ‘special mention’ for the score for the film Beneath the Baobab Tree.
The jury, formed by composer Mojan Alaiyeh, sound designer Michel Schöpping and composer and chair Bob Zimmerman, were deeply impressed by the music for the films made by graduates from the Film Academy. ‘The winning composer is the one who has written a remarkably diverse score,’ says the jury report. 'The score is original, amazing, versatile, and shows deep dramatic insight. (…) By consciously choosing not to take the main subject of the film as the theme for the composition, the music enhances a layered and profound experience.’
The Keep an Eye Filmscore Award consists of an amount of € 3.500,- (winner) and € 500,- (special mention), to be put towards equipment and further professional development. The prize is made available by the Keep an Eye Foundation. With their projects, both winners have graduated from the master programme in Composing for Film, which the CvA offers jointly with the Netherlands Film Academy.
