In Memoriam Geert Berghs (1953-2025)

Published on

We received the sad news that former teacher Geert Berghs has passed away. Until his retirement in 2023, Geert was a voice teacher in the choral conducting department of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Geert Berghs was a versatile personality. He completed a degree in medicine, obtained a minor in musicology, and studied solo singing with Margreet Honig. He performed as a soloist and choir singer with a repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music. For several years, he was a member of The Amsterdam Baroque Choir conducted by Ton Koopman. Later, he was a research assistant at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he initiated a major research into the aging singing voice. He also initiated the ‘Meesters & Gezellen’ development programme for young singers and was active as a vocal coach with various choirs in Belgium and abroad.

We remember Geert as a committed, inspiring teacher and are grateful to him for everything he contributed to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and former students.

On behalf of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam,
