Which experiences and gains does the MoccaTAC research community provide with its tackling of inequality of opportunity in Amsterdam arts education.

The MoccaTac project initiated by Mocca focuses on the question of whether the creation of learning communities in primary and secondary schools and cultural institutions can be used in the long term as a means of addressing social issues. In the pilot project of MoccaTAC, duos (teachers from schools and educators from cultural institutions) focus on the social issue of inequality of opportunity in Amsterdam education. The duos conduct exploratory research based on the central question: How can cultural education contribute to equality of opportunity in Amsterdam? The research into the collaboration project MoccaTAC, between Amsterdam teachers and cultural institutions therefore fits within the research theme Social Engagement of the Arts Education Research Group: ‘By researching which values, social changes, arts educational practices and content is need to foster inclusion and accessibility in arts education, the research group wants to contribute to cultural participation of everyone in society.’ (research agenda Arts Education Research Group AHK).
This research focuses on the experiences and gains of the participants in terms of the role of cultural education with social issues in general, and with equality of opportunity in particular.

Marike Hoekstra

Marike Hoekstra (1966) is researcher, teacher and visual artist. She did Master’s degrees in Russian Literature and Arts Education. She worked as lecturer in Teaching Methodology and Research at the Breitner Academy and the Master of Education in Arts. Her research publications concern the artist teacher (2009, 2010) and ‘altermoden’ art education (2012). Marike obtained her doctorate from the University of Chester on 9 November 2018, under the supervision of Professor Jeff Adams, for research into the implications of the artist teacher on the democratic education practice. The aim of the research was to research the significance of a double professional practice for a democratic educational practice through small-scale, interpretive analysis of the practices of artist teachers. The research also partly explored the possibilities of artistic research methods.
