Transdisciplinary design labs

This research project searched for new ways of making meaningful lesson materials at the interface of arts, technology and science. The teaching materials are focused on developing the 21st century skills creative thinking, solving problems, critical thinking and collaboration for pupils in secondary education. The envisaged teaching materials are transdisciplinary: that is to say that expertise from various disciplines need to be interwoven in such a way that there is a deep integration of knowledge and skills (Marshall, 2014). In order to develop these teaching materials, a team was put together with teachers (arts subjects and science subjects), artists, designers and scientists. In the design labs, the participants developed teaching materials that were later implemented at the participating secondary schools. Empirical research focused on the processes in the labs and the designed teaching materials.
