‘From the inside, out.’ Choreographer Hisako Horikawa brings Japanese dance tradition to SNDO

Choreographer Hisako Horikawa introduced the SNDO students to her rich artistic practice rooted in Butoh and Body Weather principles. The students turned their attention inwards, heightening their concentration to develop physical interpretations of natural phenomena: landscapes, dense mist, a waterfall, a tree cracking.

These initial experiments led to explorations of broader themes such as material, quality, and the body’s relationship to space. The work was carried out and presented at Dansmakers and Frascati in Amsterdam. SNDO’s latest AIR Hisako Horikawa was once again a foreign choreographer of international repute, continuing the department’s policy of engaging with the challenges of influences from beyond the borders of Europe and America.
