Artist in Residence - Karen Pearlman

Netherlands Film Academy 2024

The Netherlands Film Academy has invited editor, filmmaker, lecturer and researcher Karen Pearlman as Artist in Residence to work with students, lecturers and researchers from the academy. Pearlman is the author of Cutting Rhythms, Intuitive Film Editing, a book that offers a groundbreaking perspective on the profession and work of the film editor. The book explores the essential meaning of rhythm in film storytelling and how editors can deepen their intuitive understanding of it.

Karen Pearlman
Dr. Karen Pearlman is a writer, director and editor. She conducts research on creative practices, cognition and feminist film histories, and is Deputy Director of the Creative Documentary Research Centre (Macquarie University, Australia). She has a background as a dancer and choreographer. It is this experience of the intrinsic relationship between body, mind and creativity that has shaped her practical approach and theoretical reflections on the profession of the editor.

The activities during Karen's residency consist of:

  • The Cutting Rhythms workshop for editing students. Together with the students, she investigates in which rhythms you can edit.
