CASE (Centre for Arts & Sciences Education)

CASE (Centre for Arts & Sciences Education) is an initiative of the Arts Education research group led by Melissa Bremmer and Emiel Heijnen and is led by director Anne Nigten. She has conducted an extensive needs analysis among stakeholders from the field. This analysis showed a great need for cross-curricular education at the intersection of arts, technology and/or science. The needs analysis also highlighted a number of current themes such as social and ecological engagement. CASE is located in the AHK LearningLab at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam.

CASE aims to bring about social innovation from innovative art education along two thematic lines: Education at the intersection of Arts, Technology and Science (OKWT) and Social and ecological engagement.

The first theme: Education at the intersection of Arts, Science and Technology is a continuation of the research, knowledge and experience of, among others, the platform Onderwijs op het snijvlak van Kunst, Wetenschap en Technologie (OKWT) (Education at the intersection of Arts, Science and Technology, OKWT). In the OKWT platform, lectors from 7 universities of applied sciences work together on cross-curricular education at the hybrid intersection of art and science. The CoE Arts&Education, together with the relevant lectors, is investigating how we can best share and concretise knowledge from OKWT with study programmes and teachers at various levels.

The second theme: social and ecological engagement is directly linked to so-called 'wicked problems', complex issues that require an interdisciplinary (educational) approach. This revolves around inclusive arts education, arts education as citizenship education and socio-ecological issues.

Both themes are in line with current curriculum developments in primary education, secondary education and (preparatory) vocational education. In the near future, the themes and issues will be further refined with cultural and social organizations from the professional field. To this end, we regularly organize meetings with the professional field. CASE is developed according to a network model, where input from the professional field is welcome.
