An initiation to action
Author: Gabriela Acosta Camacho
About a year ago the lectorate Social Justice and Diversity in the Arts received the request to develop a module for the teacher professionalization offerings at the AHK on social safety. From the lectorate I was given the opportunity to sink my teeth into this.
A first pilot of the module “Inclusive Learning and Working Environment” took place from February to April 2024. The Inclusivity Pathway Training (Cairo, Roseval, Ona, & Bouzaggou, 2023) and the five pillars of the lectorate formed the basis for this module. In addition to peer review and theory, participants engaged in physical exercises and were given time and space to create their own exercise based on all the methods taught from the module. The exercises were tested in their own work practice and we also carried out the exercises with each other. We created space to discuss and try out with one another issues that arose during the testing in practice, such as “how can I do this with another group”, “in what way can I also make it physical” and “how do I deal with an exercise that turns out differently than expected”.
The module also focused on your own actions and thinking about “inclusion” in its broadest sense. What is exciting, what do you run into, what do you doubt about - what do you need in order to act? The lectorate's five pillars (relationality, temporality, transformation, cost and joy) were our framework for communicating and reflecting with each other.
With the outcomes of written assignments, observations and surveys, I am currently analyzing collected data to map what this module has brought according to the participants*. To what extent do participants feel (more) competent and do they dare (start) to act differently? In doing so, I am taking a qualitative evaluation research approach as described by Lub and Rensen (2022) in combination with a methodological approach based on indigenous knowledge research as described by Keane, Khupe and Muza (2016). Where this will lead, I don't know yet! We’ll keep you posted.
Personally, I look back on an extraordinary and intense process. The pillar of joy comes to mind... Thank colleagues that we have been piloting with each other in this way.
Interested in following the module? A new round will start in October 2024. You can read more and sign up via this link. For explanations of the pillars and more, check out our videos.
*Participants in the module were informed about the study prior to the survey and provided consent. All information will be anonymized. Of course, before the study is released to the public, it will first be presented to the participants.
