Weaving
By Paulina Trejo Méndez
On the 10th and 11th of January we invited people to join the collective weaving session at the ATD building as part of the grieving project that took place during research month. The invitation was to mourn together through the act of weaving to re-signify “Sangre de mi sangre” (Blood of my blood). This is an artistic project by feminist collective Hilos (threads) that aims to raise awareness about forced disappearance and feminicide in Mexico. This art project is also a form of protest that has been re-signified in other countries like Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Germany and now the Netherlands to adapt it to their context and sociopolitical realities.
The act of weaving allowed us to open conversation and to be present together. It was beautiful to share our stories and to help each other weave with our fingers. The textiles woven remained as part of the installation at the Punt in the ATD. What do we need to grieve for? The world we live in can be painful and unfair at times, there are wounds that are not only individual so, it is also important to create space for collective grieving and healing. The hope is that we continue to open up to other people’s stories and weave together in many ways.
