On May 8 the lectorate Social Justice and Diversity in the Arts is organizing a meeting about gentrification in Nieuw Metropolis Nieuw-West. During this meeting, we will listen together with residents of Amsterdam Nieuw-West, students, and activists to the memories and stories we have collected during the 'Re-membering Nieuw-West’ Easter School. Alongside these memories and stories, we will hear other narratives and memoirs from researchers and local residents. Will you share your story?

Researcher Sophia Holst will share her perspective on the topic. She will present some of her (archival and field) research findings on the segregation of Amsterdam residents with a migration background in Nieuw-West. Additionally, she will play audio clips from residents in the Wildeman and Johan Piet neighborhoods and share photos from the bike tour she organized with Tayfun Balçık.

Karima Aissaoui is a writer, journalist, and visual creator. She will share her reflections on Nieuw-West, where she was raised. Karima studied Communication Science and obtained a Master's in Marketing from the VU University in Amsterdam. For the Volkskrant, she wrote a series on gentrification in Slotervaart in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, where she interviewed old and new residents.
