Making space for opinions and artistic potential in a polarised world

An investigation into the tools that a theatre teacher needs in order to create a safe teaching situation nowadays.

In the present-day Netherlands, we have the feeling that we are becoming increasingly polarised: groups of people seem to be increasingly at odds with each other and the divide between them appears to be growing greater and greater. Theatre teachers are always dealing with that which is taking place outside their teaching as well. The perceived polarisation in society is therefore part of that. That polarisation can limit actors in terms of the way in which they dare to express themselves in the lesson. When creating theatre in which the actor is the source, a theatre teachers wants the various actors to feel they have the space to freely share their opinions and artistic abilities. The youth theatre company DEGASTEN has such a working method, which makes this possible. This research wants to map out that working method through observations and interviews, and to examine which elements are crucial to that. This working method will subsequently be described and assessed by developing a workshop in which Theatre in Education students take part. On the basis of their findings, an assessment will be made of what works and what doesn’t work. This should ultimately result in a working method that can be used by both the Theatre in Education study programmes, as well as by theatre teachers in the field.
